Names Families and Plaids. Many Scottish names come from Gaelic and most of our ancestors did not write the language so many differing names in fact can originate from the same source. In the past surnames were not used but important land owners used the name of their estate (e.g Locheil). The first time many names were written was by a passing ships captain or a minister who wrote down the name as it sounded to him. Current English usage accepts MacDonald, McDonald, Macdonald or even in our case Donaldson so please don't be concerned if your name is not exactly as spelt in the plaid lists, this does not mean that you come from a different clan than those with a similar spelling or sound.

Plaid History. There's also a brief History of Clan Plaid.
